A German Tommy

Anderson, Ken2014
Book
While recovering from injuries sustained whilst fighting close to the German lines, British army officer Lieutenant Walter Lancelot Merritt confessed a remarkable truth: in a petition to King George, he revealed that his real name was Walter Schwarz, and he had deserted from the Australian Imperial Force in 1915 because he feared his German ancestry would prevent him being sent into battle. Using Schwarz's incredible story as a basis, 'A German Tommy' examines the way in which people of German origin were treated in Australia and Britain during the First World War.
