Abstract: Our battered old suitcases were packed and, if I had been older and wiser, I would have realised immediately that nobody ever took ALL their worldly possessions for a "lovely little holiday"!The mass exodus of children from Britain's major cities in 1940 was unique. Many of the foster parents who took in these evacuees did so for the cash. The family who took in Alf treated him appallingly, until his real mother arrived. Alf and his siblings then remained in Cornwall with their mother until the end of the war.Eventually they returned to the capital to find rows of houses, even whole streets, had been destroyed. Rounding the story off with a return to Cornwall, Alf recounts his thoughts on evacuation after an absence of over 60 years.
